Overview

Jaisalmer, nicknamed "The Golden city", is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, located 575 kilometres west of the state capital Jaipur. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone and is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples of both the fort and of the town below are built of finely sculptured sandstone. The town lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert) and has a population, including the residents of the fort, of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District. Jaisalmer was once the capital of Jaisalmer State.

The city is adorned with a number of lagoons, ornamental Jain places of worship, and lavish havelis. This is however one side of the coin. Jaisalmer is also known for its offbeat desert safari experience. The city offers pleasant stays in the middle of the vast spread Thar desert and loads of adventure activities to give you a completely unforgettable experience.

Moreover, there are several state and private buses operating from Rajasthan and Gujarat for Jaisalmer at regular intervals.

The Golden Bus Terminal and Roadways main bus stand are the two main bus stands in Jaisalmer. The cities of Jodhpur, Bikaner and Ajmer are located at a distance of 275 KM, 270 KM and 375 KM from Jaisalmer. It also has a good connectivity with the state capital Jaipur, which is some 500 KM away from Jaisalmer. There is good bus service and cabs available.
    • By Train: Jaisalmer is connected with various cities through broad gauge and meter gauge railway tracks. There are direct trains from the cities of Delhi and Jaipur to Jaisalmer. The ‘Palace on Wheels’ also connects Jaisalmer.
    • By Flight: Jaisalmer is not directly connected by air with any part of India. Jodhpur Airport, located some 300 km away from Jaisalmer, is the nearest airport to the desert land. The airport connects Rajasthan with all major Indian cities. From Jodhpur Airport, tourists can hire cabs to reach Jaisalmer.
